Crystallizing Narrative

From a book on Norman Rockwell and his artwork that I finished reading this afternoon:

“What is remarkable is that he has been able to compress into single images the kinds of emotional situations that provide for writers the material for longer stories. It is as if he is able to crystallize whole slices of narrative in the details of his settings and in the gestures of his characters. The best part of this is that the narrative he suggests is completely open-ended, so that we can provide our own beginnings and our own conclusions. All the necessary information is given, but no eventualities are spelled out.”
