Spirituality in Healthcare

Today I attended a local palliative care conference, and the surrounding energy of the presenters and attendees really reinvigorated my desire for working in hospice.

Most significant to me was the acknowledgment that spirituality—the continuous transformation of our personal narrative and interpretation of life, legacy, and existence as a whole—is an integral part of health.

While the biopsychosocial model of health makes it easier to predict outcomes for healthcare professionals (which helps with controlling the situation and providing care confidently), the neglected spiritual aspect of being is what helps us to reconnect on a human level.

It often goes forgotten that spirituality directly influences what healthcare decisions are made by a patient, and we as healthcare professionals must better recognize and connect to this source of meaning and reason when providing care for our patients.
